Goals This course aims to aquaint students with specific terms and elements relating to the study of fiction in the light of various short stories in English, and teach them the ways to examine literary texts closely.
Course Content This course is an introduction to literature through short stories. In a series of lectures we will discuss specific terms and elements relating to the study of fiction in the light of various short stories in English. We will analyse the elements of fiction (i.e. plot, structure, characterisation, point of view, setting, theme, symbolism, tone and style), examine how these elements work together, and most importantly practise the art of close reading on a range of texts.
Learning Outcomes 1) Students learn the formal elements of short story.
2) Students learn to read short stories closely, and they can interpret and respond to the selected works analytically and critically.
3) Students improve their language skills by talking and writing about the texts studied.
