Goals This course is for sophomores. It is devoted to provide the students with a deeper understanding of fundamental items, types, and characteristics of the art of poetry.
Course Content This course teaches the basic elements of American poetry.
Learning Outcomes 1) To develop students’ English language usage skills: Listening, reading, speaking, and writing
2) To enable students to use in class listening, reading, speaking and writing skills by means of literary texts
3) To enable students to use listening, reading, speaking and writing skills by means of culture classes
4) To give students the skill to study literary texts with a critical eye
5) To give students the skill to analyze literary texts
6) To enhance the comprehension of literary texts by means of history of culture classes
7) To enable students to appreciate the literary texts within their cultural context
8) To bring together the English language and its usage as well as its cultural norms and paradigms
9) To enable the acquisition of the essentials of the literary genres; namely fiction (novels, short stories), drama, poetry via examples
10) To enable the acquisition of the basic periods of English and American literary history together
11) To improve students’ language skills by oral and written expressions based on the study of literary and cultural texts
12) To provide students with the means of reading and appreciating the works of any other culture via analytical and critical readings of literary and cultural texts
13) To enable students to transfer cultural traits by translation from English into Turkish and from Turkish into English while improving translation skills
