Goals The course is for fourth-year students. This course focuses on playwrights who helped shape the American stage in the first half of the 20th Century. We will study representative dramatists from each period and a range of dramatic styles with specific emphasis on modern drama. We will discuss the content and the form of the plays as they define American drama and American identity. Although analysis of dramatic texts will be our main focus, we will also pay attention to the theatrical, cultural, and historical contexts.
Course Content This course analyzes the 20th Century American Drama. AKE 419 20th-Century American Drama is devoted to the study of twentieth-century American theatre and drama from Eugene O'Neill to David Mamet. The course also focuses on principles of dramatic structure, including the interpretation of structural elements of major dramatic forms and styles in relation to stage presentation and film, and reading and analysis of representative plays. Innovations in the modern drama and the intersection between the theatre and other disciplines (psychoanalysis, social criticism, etc.) are studied throughout the course.
