Goals The main goal of the course is to introduce students to the most influential schools of archaeological thought over the course of the 20th and 21st centuries. The relationship between theoretical approaches and the interpretation of archaeological materials is explored using examples. By the end of the course students will understand theoretical approaches and be able to identify their influence within archaeological research.
Course Content The course introduces the basic theoretical approaches used in archaeology within the last hundred years and explores their effect on archaeological practice.
Learning Outcomes 1) Familiarity with archaeological terminology
2) Knowledge of the most important theoretical approaches in archaeology
3) Knowledge of the history of archaeological thought
4) Familiarity with the relationship between theory and data collection
5) Familiarity with the relationship between theory and interpretation
6) Ability to identify and discuss different theoretical approaches
7) An understanding of the term paradigm and its implications
