Goals The aim of this course is to teach the basic principles of determination of economic values of various properties that will be provided genetic improvement, to teach the methods of calculation of economic coefficients in the index equations by considering the current and future economic conditions while deciding which individuals to be selected in a breeding program.
Course Content Basic principles of response to selection. Economic selection index. Non-linear index. Appropriate economic environments. Deriving economic weights from profit function. Non-linear profit functions. Case of zero profit. Re-optimization with constrains. Estimating economic weights for catagorical traits. Gene flow, discounting and investment appraisal. Incorporating risk and profitability of success into breeding strategies.
Learning Outcomes 1) Lerning Selection Index Theory
2) Lerning Derivation of Economic Weghts in Selection Index
3) Practical Learning Selection Index in Animal Breeding
