Goals This course aims to provide basic formation about the historical conditions which necessitated the Turkish Revolution, the resistance movement led by Mustafa Kemal Pasha which emerged against the occupation of Anatolia and the military, political and diplomatical dimensions of this resistance movement.
Course Content Purpose of studying the course "Ataturk's Principles and History of Turkish Revolution" and the term of revolution; synopsis of the reasons that caused the fall of the Ottoman Empire and the emergence of Turkish revolution; disintegration of the Ottoman Empire; Mudros Armistice; condition of the country against occupations and reaction of Mustafa Kemal Pasha; Mustafa Kemal Pasha's arrival to Samsun; being organized through Congresses; the National Forces and the National Pact; opening of the Parliament (Turkish Grand National Assembly) and establishment of Regular Army; National Struggle until the Battle of Sakarya; Battle of Sakarya and the Great Offensive; National Struggle in the fields of education and culture; National Struggle in social and economic fields; from Mudanya to Lausanne.
Learning Outcomes 1) Students explain concepts like reform, revolution and learn the reasons and consequences of the reforms performed in the period of Ottoman Empire.
2) Students understand the causes of the decline of the Ottoman Empire and make evalutions in the frame of the developments in the West.
3) Students make comparisons between the innovations in the last century of Ottoman Empire and the revolution period with Atatürk.
4) Students learn the ideas came to the fore in the last years of the Ottoman Empire and make comparisons between these ideas
5) Students understand the causes and the consequences of Tripoli, Balkan Wars and the First World War symbolizing the losses in the last century of the Ottoman Empire.
6) Students learn the aggravated provisions of Mudros and understand how they give shape to the world at the Paris Peace Conference with the World War I.
7) Students have information about the government and Anatolian people against the occupations and make comparisons in this regard.
8) Students understand Mustafa Kemal Pasha and his activities ranging from Samsun to Ankara during the National Liberation War.
9) Students review "Misakı Milli (National Pact)" and make evalutions about why it is an essential document.
10) Students understand and express the meaning of both democracy and the opening of a new Parliament.
11) Students compare the National Pact with the Treaty of Sevres and compare the attitute against the Treaty of Sevres between the government in İstanbul and the New Parliament.
12) Students evaluate the conditions of Mudanya Armistice and Lausanne Peace Treaty and understand the meaning and value of independence.
