Goals This course discusses theories developed in communication field within the scope of social theory and links media criticism with social criticism. Couse aims students to understand mass communication by evaluating different approaches like Frankfurt School, Critical Economy-Politics, Cultural Studies and Postmodernism.
Course Content Explanation and discussion of communication theories
Learning Outcomes 1) Define criticism and what it is for.
2) Separate historical and spiritual roots of social criticism.
3) Evaluate media criticism in the scope of social crticism.
4) Compare critical thought with traditional criticism.
5) Explain the difference between traditional criticism and critical thought
6) Explain the methodological difference between traditional criticism and critical thought
7) Explain historical and spiritual roots of critical theory.
8) Evaluate conceptual relations and splits between thinkers such as Hegel, Marks, Gramsci and Althusser.
9) Evaulate Frankfurt School’s society and media criticism.
10) Interpret new orientations in critical communication theory begining with1960s.
11) Differentaite political, social, economic and cultural dynamics behind new criticism.
12) Determine which suggestions of Marxism leads new criticism.
13) Explain the basic problem of cultural studies and compare it with classical Marxist media criticism.
14) Differantiate thematical interests of cultural studies and link it with new social movements.
15) Evaulate research examples in cultural studies field.
16) Realize media criticism by using a specific approach and method.
