Goals This course aims to provide a general framework of refugee law and to demonstrate the legal status of the refugee within that context. The objectives of the course are to (1) evaluate the emergence of the refugeehood from a historical and sociological perspective; (2) demonstrate the reflection of this perspective on legal (national and international) framework; (3) demonstrate the fundamental concepts and principles of the refugee law; (4) demonstrate the relevant principles of Turkish law.
Course Content Within the context of the objective of the course, following issues will be covered: sources of international refugee law, the mandate of UNHCR and its function, general framework of 1951 Convention on the Status of Refugees, determination of refugee status, non-refoulement principle, right to seek and enjoy asylum, interaction between refugee law and human rights law, evaluation of the European Court of Human Rights’ relevant case law, complementary protection, effect of readmission agreements on asylum seekers, international protection statuses under Turkish law, temporary protection under Turkish law, and the effect of the EU-Turkey readmission arrangements on asylum seekers.

3) Evaluates the theoretical basis of Refugee Law and demonstrates its interactions with other disciplines
