Goals The aim of the course is to provide a new lens to better understand today's international migration and immigrant practices that go beyond national borders. This course aims to look at migration from a contemporary perspective and to examine how transnational dynamics reconfigures identity and citizenship.
Course Content This course deals with migrant transnationalism. In other words, it focuses on the process of creating continuous and dynamic social spaces across national borders through the daily life activities of immigrants among the origin and destination places in international migration. Transnationalism refers to that which takes place across national borders. It can be used to describe both material ties and symbolic flows and interconnections. As a concept transnationalism is used most frequently to describe a form of contemporary migration in which migrants form long-standing social ties and allegiances to more than one national community. Transnationalism also delineates new forms of governance and the development of institutions and social spaces that are organized across borders and which either facilitate or resist cross-border flows.
Learning Outcomes 1) Understand the basic concepts of transnationalism.
2) Identifies new research topics related to transnationalism.
3) Identifies new research problems related to transnationalism.
4) Compares the formation dynamics of transnational spaces in terms of different regions and countries.
