Goals The purpose of this course is to provide knowledge to undergraduate students as follows: from the point of the political, the economic and the cultural fields of geography, but the emphasis will remain upon social issues affecting people’s life, class, race/ethnicity, gender, poverty, the body, health and well-being. This course explains and focuses on, the role of space in the creation of social inequality with particular emphasis on the Turkish context in places as well.
Course Content Generally, ‘Social Geography’ can be defined as a geographical investigation of the relationships between spatial change and social processes. Social Geography is primarily concerned with the ways in social relations, identities and inequalities are created. How these creations vary over space and the role of space in their construction is the principle distinction between sociology and social geography. Sociology emphasizes society, but geographers emphasize space: in social geography we are concerned with society and space.
Learning Outcomes 1) Students can identify the social construction of space and explain the interaction between the society and space
2) Students can explain spatial differences based on the social processes
3) Students know the social problems, social inequalities and explain the reasons of the socio-spatiall differences by region of the world.
4) Students know the variability by gender, religion, ethnicity, culture and education outcomes of socio-spatial structures
5) Students can develop insights to conduct a social research based on the relationship between society and the space
6) Students know the concepts and methods of social geography and can explain social structures by rregion of the world in different spatial scales
