Goals The 21st century will be known as an urban century. We will examine the implications of this for the world’s population by considering three general themes: an historical geography of urban development, considering their impact on existing and future urban landscapes; world cities as the powerhouses of the global economy; and, urban social geography, within the context urban poverty and segregation. Attention will be given to themes such as urbanization and urbanism, cities and globalization.
Course Content Fifty percent of the global population and three forths of Turkish people live in cities. Urban geography is the social science that investigates the integration of built forms, human interactions and the environmental aspects of places. Course examines origins and growth of cities, impacts of globalization on cities, and social landscapes of city. This course will bring an understanding of what it means to be "urban" historically and in the 21st century
Learning Outcomes 1) Defines the nature of change in human environments and gives examples.
2) Defines the interrelations between physical and human environment and gives examples.
3) Defines the diversity and interdependence of the spaces at different spatial scales and gives examples.
4) It is sensitive to events and developments on the agenda of society and the world.
5) Design and apply field-based research.
