Goals This is the class that focuses on the biology and management of honey bees. The aim of the course is to teach the fundamentals of honey bee biology and colony management.
Course Content Apiculture and its importance to modern agriculture, the history of apiculture, classification of bees, geographical honey bee races, colony life history, colony members and their properties, caste differentiation and sex determination, the genetic structure of the colony, basic beekeeping principles, colony management, and seasonal practices, swarming, queen rearing
Learning Outcomes 1) Know the honey bee products and their use.
2) Define the social structure of the honey bee.
3) Describe the basic principles of colony management.
