Goals The aim of the course 'Forensic Analysis of Fire Debris' is to teach students how to conduct forensic analysis of debris left after fires and to understand how these analyses are used in fire-related crime scene investigations. This course will enable students to identify changes caused by fire and explosion incidents, apply examination techniques, and evaluate evidence obtained from fire debris in forensic laboratory settings.
Course Content This course covers a broad spectrum, ranging from how debris is collected and preserved after fires and explosions, to the application of physical and chemical analysis techniques, and the evaluation of biological and genetic materials in fire debris. Additionally, it focuses on developing expertise in forensic reporting processes and expert witness skills for courtroom proceedings. Case studies are used to support theoretical knowledge with practical applications, and discussing current trends and future directions is also an integral part of the course.
Learning Outcomes 1) Learns fire and explosion dynamics.
2) Learns crime scene investigation and protection techniques after fire.
3) Learns physical, chemical and biological analysis methods used in the analysis of fire residues.
4) Develops forensic reporting and expert witness skills.
