Special Education Department, The Program in Education of the Mentally Handicapped is an undergraduate program which consists of therotical and practical classes. The main purpose of the program is to educate special educators who will able to work with the children, families, teachers, administrators and community leaders in order to meet the needs of the children with mental retardation and their families.

The department carries out educational researches and projects in related with various areas of special education, also develops and implements pilot programs for children, families and teachers.

The purpose of the department of Special Education, The Program in Education of the Mentally Handicapped is to develop and implement undergraduate and graduate programs focus on educating special educators who will able to work with the children, families, teachers, administrators and community leaders in order to meet the needs of the children with mental retardation and their families. The department carries out educational researches and projects in related with various areas of special education, also develops and implements pilot programs for children, families and teachers.
Our mission:

1. Supporting every individuals with special needs to gain needed skills to live independently.
2. Providing support services for individuals with special needs and their parents.
3. Providing information to the community about special education services and individuals with special needs .
4. Participating actively in the process of determining special education political process.
5. Improving special education services and supporting to wide spread special education support services.
6. Supporting to provide special education services with a part of general education services.
7. Supporting to provide special education support services in least restricted environments.
8. Increasing the quality of special education services. 9. Raising special education teachers who knows and implies different teaching methods .
10. Raising responsible and sensitive teachers for special education problems and able individuals for providing solutions to the problems.
11. Supporting to gain interdisciplinary working skills for special education teachers.
12. Raising special education specialist who provides quality services.
13. Raising teacher candidates with the needed skills regarding job ethics.
14. Leading in every area of special education researches.

The program trains teachers to work with individuals with special needs who become more independent, productive and active participants of the society; teachers are trained to understand their profession's value in social development, to achieve ethical standards, to adopt scientific thinking and to use information and communication technologies affectively.
