About Program

Chemistry program offers a program that supports and monitors undergraduate academic studies and research activites under the guidance of qualified, principled, sophisticated and experienced academic staff (32 professors, 6 associate professors, 1 assistant professor, 1 specialist, 23 research assistants, 5 chemists, and 1 engineer by 25.04.2013) by the use of contemporary infrastructure and equipment. The program has adopted an understanding that is focused on research and technology, and that encourages studies addressing social requirements. As a recognized and distinctive education institution in the national and international arenas in terms of education and research, it educates well-equipped, contemporary and innovative chemists with outstanding work force, and who have internalized pre-eminent aspects of scientific approach.  It offers the basic concepts, main practices and the interfaces of the science of chemistry, one of the most important elements of modern science, with other sciences in a way that complies with the rules of higher education.  In order to be in harmony with the scientific and technological developments, and guide the students to specialise in a specific field while providing them with sufficient training, the program has a regularly updated curriculum including basic chemistry education in the first three years, and Analytical Chemistry, Anorganic Chemistry, Biochemistry, Industrial Chemistry, Physiochemistry and Organic Chemistry elective courses for the senior students. Students can take 93 basic courses in departments of chemistry  with the help of a program in accordance with the world standards. Students in the program are required to go through theoretical, practical and laboratory stages covering courses of minimum 162 credits or 240 ECTS credits, and have an average assessment score of minimum 2.00 in order to be equipped with the course acquisitions involved and to graduate. As chemistry is a discipline that studies all kinds of interaction, change and transformation of substance and energy not only for its own sake but also in other fields, it has primary effects on other disciplines. The contents of chemistry courses is influenced by the improvements in the field and the identity of the academic members offering these courses. Therefore, it is subject to change in time. Course acquisitions offered by the program and the distribution of the topics over weeks is not convenient for an in-depth presentation of each concept.  While the curriculum outline does not change,  it is very natural that the details of individual topics may vary according to the academic member in charge. The course contents included in the program  covers the main topics of this discipline in modern times thoroughly. As the case is in all fields, the contents of each individual course may at times overlap with the contents of other courses in order to ensure the integrity of that course. With the developments in science, especially in popular scientific fields, new topics and even new courses are naturally included in the program.  While the program is indirectly influenced by current learning - teaching theories bringing different approaches to the learning process, a particular approach is not prioritized. For instance, while behavioral approach is adopted when measurability is required, constructive approach is employed in learning environments and during in-class discussions.

Goals

To educate individuals with a contemporary chemistry bachelor's degree (chemists) who

• have comprehensive knowledge of computer and information technologies,
• can speak at least one foreign language,
• have internalised the basic concepts about chemistry and can transfer these concepts to others,
• have basic knowledge and skills to work in chemistry laboratories, can transfer these knowledge and skills to others and are equipped with analysis and synthesis skills,
• are able to use the tools and devices in laboratories and teach how to use them to others,
• can adapt to working in organisations active in the fields of production, inspection or research and development in chemistry, and can undertake administrative positions in such organisations,
• can conduct basic and applied research at an advanced technological level and can solve scientific and technological problems independently,
• are capable of thinking in a  designing, enterprising, creative, critical and modern way and are able to implement their ideas,
• are sensitive to man, society and environment, has comprehended the importance of himself/herself and his/her profession in terms of social development, has earned the responsibility of being sufficient and ethical in his/her job, perceives continual development as a lifestyle and adopts scientific thinking, acquires competencies, and are high qualified and competitive in every area of life,

and to place these graduates to the top among the group of most preferred ones.

Summary of Program Outcomes

The student gains theoretical and practical knowledge about different branches of chemistry. The student has a command of the basic principles of physics, biology and mathematics and uses these principles in chemistry. The student writes equalities for chemical reactions, knows the logic of writing equalities, interprets the written equalities, considers and discusses the reactions multi-dimensionally when necessary.
