About Program
Starting in the 2010-2011 academic year Ankara University established a new program under its Faculty of Divinity in order to open its gates to international students who seek to gain a well-grounded academic education in the fields of Islamic theology and religious studies. Courses are conducted in English, and there is a one-year preparatory English language class for students who do not have the required level in the language. At the end of the fourth academic year, the students qualify for a BA degree. Information regarding the application process may be found on the Faculty’s website (www.divinity.ankara.edu .tr). Foreign students are financially supported throughout their education by the Turkish Religious Foundation.
Goals
The Program aims for students to acquire a comprehensive knowledge of Islam in general as well as specific academic skills, including: · the ability to do research on religions in general and on Islam in particular in an interdisciplinary manner using original sources. · possessing an advanced level of English and Arabic, as well as a third language at the upper-intermediate level. · being knowledgeable about major issues and problems in the fields of theology, philosophy, history, and other pertinent disciplines. · the ability to resolve problems encountered in religious issues. · the ability to communicate the truths obtained through academic studies to society. · the ability to utilize scholarly techniques and methods in research. · the ability to think, discuss, and write about issues in a critical manner. · the ability to do all of the above using the English language and terminology of the field.
Summary of Program Outcomes
Upon completion of the four year academic program, students will possess the rich background required for academic engagement and the production of knowledge in field of Islamic theology. They will be able to effectively share in and contribute to knowledge produced in English on the national and international scale, to analyze and comment on religious issues in a critical way with a robust awareness of the important and varied influence of different conditions and contexts, and to find solutions to problems involving religious matters.
