About Program
Ankara University, Department of Genetics has been established in 1995 and offers doctorate education since 2007. The program contains both mandatory and elective lectures comprising theoretical genetic knowledge as well as molecular applications. These applications are practiced and maintained in the Laboratory of Molecular Genetics of the department. In accordance to the program, the department also employs three faculty members and a research assistant specialized in various subjects regarding animal genetics.
Goals
The purpose of the program is to build the scientific background in veterinary genetics, train the qualified personnel for developing genetic diagnostic methods in animal health and productivity in order to help with healthy breeding of animals, and ensure the continuity of the academic staff. To provide people working on field of animal genetics the skills to deeply understand and interpret the subjects on this field as well as to identify problems and conduct independent research on these subjects. To train the scientists with skills to infer and interpret with scientific perspective to work in the public institutions, private sector and the universities.
Summary of Program Outcomes
Graduates of the program have information on the topics below; concepts of the basic and molecular genetics, basic molecular applications, bioinformatics, databases related to animal genetics, veterinary genetics applications, inherited diseases and elimination, hereditary mechanisms, marker -assisted selection on livestock, measurement of biodiversity in animals.
