INFORMATION ABOUT THE PROGRAM:

Social Pediatrics is a branch of science that promotes the healthy living of the child, enhances the protective health services and lays emphasis on the priority of the protective and developmental health services in health policies. Social Pediatrics discipline is a field of study that serves basically for the protection and improvement of the child health and aims to protect the child and social health through an integrated approach. Social Pediatrics Department of Ankara University has been established in 1992 and approved by the Higher Education Council in 1994. The Graduate Program in Social Pediatrics (with thesis), which is among the education programs offered by the Ankara University Institute of Health Sciences, was started in 2003. Within the scope of this Program, courses regarding the following fields are offered:  child health programs implemented by the Ministry of Health, the monitoring of child health, screening programs, the monitoring of growth and psychosocial development in childhood, infant and child care, immunization, nutrition, childhood accidents, child neglect and abuse, common infectious diseases, common psychological problems, school health, relation between child health and environment, and child safety in new media . 

Goals

OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAM: Graduate Program in Social Pediatrics aims at the education of pediatricians who adopt an understanding of social medicine with regard to medical knowledge, skill and manner and who received Social Pediatrics education, the training of specialists of Social Pediatrics who will be assigned in the fields in which education and service is planned and of doctors who will lay the foundations of Social Pediatrics Departments in Universities; therefore targeting the protection and improvement of child health.

Summary of Program Outcomes

PROGRAM PROFICIENCY SUMMARY: Graduates of the Program; Have knowledge about the following fields: physical, cognitive and psychosocial factors that may affect children’s health; growth, nutrition, child care; the efforts dedicated to the improvement and enhancement of child health in Turkey and in the world; prevention, early diagnosis and treatment of diseases with high rates of childhood mortality and morbidity; programs and projects implemented by the Ministry of Health in the field of child health; child neglect and abuse and school health services. Graduates of the Program gain skills on the identification of children’s needs in the fields of biopsychosocial environment, nutrition, education, social protection, vocational consultancy; early response to the identified problems, provision of parenting education for the protection and enhancement of child health, establishment of the convenient communication with the child, family, other individuals and institutions intending the child; implementation of public health and social education, adoption of proper approach to the child neglect and abuse and their family-based implementation. Graduates of the Program adopt a manner of awareness that the protection and improvement of the health is of a higher priority than its treatment and that it plays an active role in raising health awareness. The graduates aim, in this context, at the organization of health services and working in coordination and cooperation with social institutions and organizations regarding this field.
