About Program
The very first medical faculty
of Turkey, found under Republic era, is Ankara Medical Faculty which was opened
on October 19, 1945. The Institute of the History of Medicine was founded in
1946 and until 1981 named as a “chair” and later as a department of “Medical
History and Deontology”. It is now the Department of History of Medicine and
Ethics. Academic staff of the department comprised of four professors, one
assistant professor and one research assistant.
The department is interested in “medical ethics”, “history of medicine”,
“medical deontology” and “bioethics”. Department is
responsible for the lectures of the field in “Medicine” undergraduate program
in Ankara University Faculty of Medicine. Department also has a doctoral
program which started in the academic year, 1988 - 89, a master of science
program started in academic year 2014 -15 and a specialty program ended in
2002. Two different seminar programs have been undertaken; “The Seminars of
Konukevi Circle” (1988 - 2011) and “Discussions of Medical Ethics Problems”
(1988 - ). More recently, the
department has had important role in the shaping of some ethical initiatives in
Turkey; the Ethics Committee of Turkish Medical Association (1994), Bioethics
Society of Turkey (1994), The Turkiye Klinikleri Journal of Medical Ethics-Law
and History (1994), Turkish Journal of Bioethics (2014).
Goals

Summary of Program Outcomes
PhD graduate student; has adequate knowledge on issues of science ethics, research ethics, publication ethics, basic and specific topics of medical ethics and current ethical debates, and in addition, of the methodology of history of medicine and historiography, evolution of Western medical thought, Islamic and Turkish history of medicine; is skilled on planning, conducting and publishing researches of medical ethics and history of medicine; may serve in ethics committees, can analyse clinical ethics discussions and provide consultancy.
