In Turkey, Religious Education as a scientific discipline, has been quite late in comparison to Western countries. The scientific studies directly related to the field of religious education began with Beyza Bilgin. In 1965-66 Bilgin started to work as a research asistant in department of RE and finished her PhD with the titile of "Love as an essential of education in Islam" in 1971. This study was the first academic product in RE.RE Department in Ankara University Divinity Faculty started its activities in 13.05.1980. 

This programme aims to edificate scholars that;
-have scientific knowledge in RE
-know the modern and conventional litterateurof Religious Sciences which have a relationship with RE
-produce knowledge by scientific methods
-have comment ability by criticizing and scientific methods

A student who graduated from the program; has knowledge advanced in the field of RE and uses in a competent manner sources in this field and uses researches methods and techniques used in RE and improves objective and consistent comment about RE issues and uses theoretical and practical knowledge at the level of expertise acquired in field of RE and uses primary and secondary sources in the field and has the scientific language skills and applies in interdisciplinary studies problem-solving competence in the field of RE and shares in verbal and written form at national and international level information related to this field.
