About Program
The Faculty of
Languages and History-Geography, Art History Department was established
by Prof. Dr. Katharina Otto-Dorn, coming from Heidelberg University in
1954. While it was the Chair of Art History and Turkish Art, then the
Art History Chair in the early years, after been a branch under the
Department of Archaeology and Art History between the years 1982-1998,
as of the arrangements in the academic staff it has become the Art
History Department since 1998.
Goals
Aim of the art history programme is to educate the art historians who can recognize and follow the origins and historical process of the plastic arts consisting painting, sculpture and handicrafts; know the main periods and basic features of the Byzantine, Islamic, European and Turkish arts with perceiving and examining the relations and the interactions with the other cultural environments; obtain the skills and methods of research, examination, documentation, evaluation, interpretation and presentation.
Summary of Program Outcomes
The basic concepts, terminology and relations to the other disciplinary branches of Art History Field studies, surface surveys, archaeological excavations, restoration and conversation of variable art monuments in Art History. Research methods; surveying the city, region, historical environment; documenting with inventory, drawing and photographing; arranging an archive; style criticism, typology and dating in Art History. The occurrence of art, it’s main stages, plastic art branches and color, texture, line, form, space, dimension, harmony, material knowledge. Style types in the aspects of the era, region and artist.
