About Program
Department of Sumerology is a philological branch that is placing in the Department of Ancient Languages and Cultures, Faculty of Letters, Ankara University. In this department, miscellaneous public’s writtings, languages and cultures that occurred in Anatolia and Mesopotamia dates from ± 3300 to 0 BC. are being researched. Hereof, primarily, invention and usages of cuneiform writing system and historical changes of its characters are also researched in this department. Especially, Old Assyrian writing system and dialect, which is the beginning of Anatolian historical scene named Old Assyrian Colonial Trading Period, are studied with original resources in detail.
Goals
Sumerology aims at the promotion of the researcher who can analyze material for investigation of the ancient history of Anatolia and Mesopotamia.
Summary of Program Outcomes
The students gratuate as acquired a good infrastructure about languages and cultures of Sumerian, Akkadian, Assyrian and Babylonian that lived in Ancient Anatolia and Ancient Mesopotamia and used the cuneiform writing.They have as much as possible knowledge about grammar, linguistic and vocabulary of this languages as learning all of the characteristics of cuneiform and as reading texts of different periods and various subjects. Graduates acquire ability of studying on the field and to publish article in national or international journals.
