About Program
The very first medical faculty of Turkey, found under
Republic era, is Ankara Medical Faculty which was opened on October 19,
1945. The Institute of the History of Medicine was founded in 1946 and
until 1981 named as a “chair” and later as a department of “Medical
History and Deontology”. It is now the Department of Deontology (
Medical Ethics).
The department is interested in “medical ethics”, “history of medicine”,
“medical deontology” and “bioethics”. The subjects in the undergraduate
program which also being lectured at other dentistry faculties and
allied health schools in Ankara.
Department also has a doctoral program which started in the academic
year, 1988- 89, beside a specialty program.
Two different seminar programs have been undertaken; “The Seminars of
Konukevi Circle” and “Discussions of Medical Ethics Problems”. These
programs have been continued since 1988.
More recently, the department has had important role in the shaping of
some ethical initiatives in Turkey; the Ethics Committee of Turkish
Medical Association(1994), Bioethics Society of Turkey (1994), the
Journal of Turkish Medical Ethics (1994).
Goals
Objective of History of Medicine and Ethics postgraduate program is to meet authentic knowledge of the field with scholars holding a bachelor degree and willing to follow a career in History of Medicine and Ethics field. History of Medicine and Ethics field includes methodology and knowledge of two fundamental and separate disciplines. Candidates mostly originated from medicine, nursing, dentistry, pharmacy, biology, law, philosophy, sociology etc. graduates. Gaining History of medicine and evolution of medicine point of view, comprehending history of medicine topics, steeping in medical ethics and bioethics, obtaining the ability to analyze ethical dilemmas and conducting research comprise the main objectives of the program.
Summary of Program Outcomes
Graduates has knowledge on General History of Medicine, History Theories, Methodology of History, Fundamental Philosophy and Biomedical Ethics. Academician candidates may steep in “research ethics, “business ethics” or will be able to continue their career with programs on other social fields of medicine.
