About Program

The Field Crops Department’s program involves theoretical, practical teaching and research on growing and breeding of cereals and pulses, industrial crops, forage crops and pastures; biotechnology, seed technology, cytology, farming systems (organic farming, sustainable agriculture, etc) in fields.

Master’s degree program with and without thesis in the Field Crops Department covers field  and laboratory studies on cereals, pulses, oil crops, fiber-rubber plants, starch-sugar crops, tobacco-drug and spice plants, forage crops, pasture improvement and management, biotechnology, cytology, seed and seed technology and farming systems.

Goals

The program aims to conduct agronomic and breeding researches on cereals and pulses, industrial crops, forage crops and pastures, under the field and laboratory conditions based on competences of the degree program of the Field Crops Department. It also aims to have theoretical and practical knowledge in specialized field, establishing relationships with other disciplines. The program has been designed for training engineers, who are fully qualified for working on field crops based on scientific perceptions helping them to take unbiased decisions, giving them problem solving objective vision in breeding, taking into consideration national and regional priorities. Furthermore, the program also aims to train them for learning & designing skills for development of entrepreneurial and dynamic skills with nurturing of human awareness to environment, social consciousness by fully equipping them with agricultural techniques related to cultivation of field crops in our country and thus contribute to the development of agriculture.

Summary of Program Outcomes

Scope of the program for degree in field crops is covered by cereals, pulses, industrial crops, forage crops and pastures with theoretical and practical knowledge in plant growing and breeding issues. Fundamentals of production, registration, controlling and certification of seed are also covered in the program. General information about diseases and pests control of field crops, insect control in storage of field crops and weed control in field crop production has been given. Methods of transportation, storage and standardization related to cereals and edible legumes are also given. General principles of rangeland management and improvement will be provided. The program also contains special information on growing techniques and uses of aromatic and medicinal plants. Fundamental knowledge about plant genetic resources in terms of Turkey’s field crops, their potential, conservation on genetic resources will be provided. Theoretical and practical knowledge about organic farming skills, tissue culture, gene transfer methods and practices in field crops will be given. Depending on expertise in research area, department of field crops conducts target oriented research under field and laboratory condition offering solutions to problems related to area leading to publication of research results in national and international journals and meetings.
