About Program
Department of Biology was established in 1933 within the body of Supreme Institute of Agriculture as Zoology and Botany Departments that perform teaching in the fields of Physics, Chemistry and Biology. In 1948-49 education term, with the aim of giving triple (physics, chemistry and biology) undergraduate education, it was transferred to Faculty of Science under the name of Nature Sciences Department. In the same year, Botany (Founders: Prof. Dr. Krause, Dr. Hikmet Ahmet Birand, Dr. Salahattin Fehmi Kuntay), Zoology (Founders: Prof. Dr. Wolterek, Dr. Mithat Ali Tolunay) and Geology Institutes were established.
Education of Nature Sciences containing triple undergraduate education program was maintained until 1965 and in 1968 it was replaced with the dual undergraduate education program. In 1983, Department of Biology was founded by combining The Zoology and Botany Departments based on the ‘2547’ Higher Education Law. As of today, total of 19 Full-Professors, 13 Associate Professors, 1 Assistant Professor, 1 Teaching Assistant, 18 Research Assistants, 1 Biologist and 2 Academic Specialists are carrying out duties in The Department of Biology. Since then, the department has been regularly admitting undergraduate and graduate students every education term. Department of Biology provides former education and accepts students based upon their scores of The National University Admissions Exam performed by OSYM (Assessment Selection and Placement Center). The student quota within the years of 2010-2015, are 196, 196, 206, 103, 72 and 77, respectively. The normal education duration is 4 years and every education year consists of 2 education terms as spring and fall terms.
Goals
The biological sciences, as being the basic sciences of living systems, do researches related to living organisms. It defines and investigates the development, evolution, genetics, physiology, ecology, protection, characterization, classification and behaviors of living organisms as well as the factors influencing all these properties. The primary aim of the program is to provide qualified teaching and education services in order to use basic biological sciences including microbiology, molecular biology, genetic and biochemistry etc. in favor of humanity and environment. For this purpose, the primary goal of the program is to teach and practice biology-based technologies in accordance with our country’s priorities and needs and within the scope of sensitiveness to nature and environment. Besides, doing applied researches with high added value and developing new technologies are also among the targets of our program.
Summary of Program Outcomes
Describes the basic concepts and information about living organisms and contemporarily follows this information according to the today's conditions. It uses scientific methods in collection, interpretation and announcement stages of data related to biology. By comprehending the problems of biological sciences, it uses the knowledge to access the ways of solution.
