About Program

The Turkish Sign Language Translation Ph.D. Program has been prepared to study Sign Languages and Turkish Sign Language Translation as an independent and scientific research area, similar to the examples in the universities around the world. The main objective of the program is to integrate the academic studies in the field of Turkish Sign Language into the field of translation, and also to train expert translators at a doctorate level.

Goals

The aim of the Turkish Sign Language Translation Ph.D. Program is to deal with Sign Languages and Turkish Sign Language Translation as an independent and scientific research area. By doing this, it will make it possible to carry out researches that shed light on the theoretical, historical, critical and methodological aspects of the subject. One of the priorities of the Ph.D. program is examining the linguistic representations of the features of Sign Languages and the Turkish Sign Language which form the compulsory source knowledge of the Sign Language Interpretation field. It is also one of the specific objectives of this program to question the cultural and verbal interaction between society and its natural, but autonomous part, the DEAF COMMUNITY, with regard to the principles and goals of discourse, sociology and ecology. In addition to the other conditions, the students who will participate in the program are required to have at least B1 level of Turkish Sign Language proficiency.

Summary of Program Outcomes

The aim of the course is to train highly academic Turkish Sign Language Translators who carry out academic researches and publications in working languages in terms of comparative linguistic principles and their aims, along with using top-level knowledge and translation technologies required by the field, and that aim to make theoretical contributions to international literary on Sign Languages and Turkish Sign Language.
