About Program
The human rights doctoral program aims to develop knowledge of human rights and to produce qualified academic studies in the field of human rights. The program is an inter-disciplinary program which accepts that the importance of theoretical dimension as well as the implementation dimension of human rights field.
Goals
The global rise and acceptance of human rights, the increase in the number of agreements and conventions made in order to secure and improve these rights, the quantitative and qualitative rise of rights and freedoms, which are also regarded as human rights and evaluated in this context, and reflections of all of them in today's state-society-individual relations increases the need for qualitative information and awareness in the field of human rights. Again, since our country is a party to various international conventions on human rights, the violation of these rights has material and moral consequences.Unfortunately, illiteracy and inadequacies on human rights, especially from law enforcement in our country, Turkey is thus being condemned on the grounds that it violates human rights in many cases. This issue adversely affects the reputation of our country before the international public opinion. The recent constitutional amendment and the adoption of an individual application to the Constitutional Court are also the result of efforts to correct this negative picture. Apart from this, academic studies qualified for the improvement of the understanding of human rights in Turkey are also needed. This PhD program will also be part of efforts to meet this need.
Summary of Program Outcomes
Based on the PhD program qualifications, students improve their knowledge both in theory and practice regarding the field of human rights and become familiar with new concepts, theories and practices. Through the lenses of other disciplines on human rights, students develop an interdisciplinary perspective. Furthermore, students can independently pursue a research that requires expertise in the field of human rights. Students can critically engage with the acquired knowledge and abilities related to human rights and can guide the learning process. Students can develop policies and strategies in the field and assess the results in this regard.
