About Program

The Department of Geological Engineering is the second department established concerning geology -the science of earth materials and processes- in Turkey. It was founded in 1933 as the "Faculty of Natural Sciences" connected to the "Institute of Technology for Agriculture". Later the department was merged the Faculty of Science. General Geology, Mineralogy and Petrography, Geochemistry and Ore Deposits, and Applied Geology are the major scientific branches of the department. Every year, approximately 60 students were admitted to the department. After fundamental education on physics, mathematics and chemistry, all the students take compulsory and elective lectures of the undergraduate curriculum which are supported by laboratories, applications, and field work. Department also offers graduate education. The Department of Geological Engineering's undergraduate education in English will be starting Fall, 2020. The prospected student profile will include both domestic and international students. The size of classes is to be somewhere between 20-30. The infrastructure of the department is not only the best in the nation, it is also one of the best worldwide. The strongest part of it includes a very rich geochemical analysis instruments as well as the geotechnical laboratory testing instruments. Faculty members are ready to initiate the program. We expect that the faculty profile will also be one of the best in the nation and among the neighboring countries in the near future.

Goals

The following objectives are envisaged to educate professionals in order to identify, measure and make them available to the country and mankind: 1. Study of matters making up the Earth, 2. Exploring the natural resources such as mines, industrial raw materials, groundwater, oil, coal and natural gas, 3. Understanding earthquake mechanisms and develop hazard reduction methods, 4. Site investigation techniques for all sizes of engineering structures, 5. Being able to map all kind of mappable geological objects of interest, 6. Training geologists and geological engineers such that the graduates can use modern engineering tools and methods, 7. Providing infrastructure for graduates to develop analytical thinking and designing ability.
