Goals This course aims to introduce basic concepts such as chemical bonds, Lewis structures, formal charge, resonance, dipole moment, writing open structures of organic compounds, nomenclature of organic compounds, stereochemistry, physical and chemical properties and to give information about the synthesis and reactions of alkanes, cycloalkanes, alkyl halogens, alkenes and alkynes, and conjugate systems and their addition reactions.
Course Content Introduction to Organic Chemistry: Basic concepts, nomenclature of organic compounds; IUPAC rules, alkanes and cycloalkanes, properties, reactions, stereochemistry, alkyl halides and nucleophilic substitution reactions, alkenes and alkynes, conjugated systems.
Learning Outcomes 1) Explains the structures of organic compounds according to the molecular orbital theory.
2) Classifies the organic compounds according to their basic functional group.
3) ames organic compounds according to internationally accepted rules
4) Recognises the isomeric species in organic chemistry.
5) Knows the physical and chemical properties of organic compounds.
6) Explains the properties that an organic compound must have in order to be aromatic.
