Goals This course aims to provide basic information on soil formation and its dynamic structure, the relationship of its physical, chemical and biological properties with the environment, current problems of soils, their protection and management, as well as to enable students to understand why soil is important for the continuity of the ecosystem.
Course Content This lesson includes the following topics: the definition of soil and its basic components, soil parent materials, major minerals and rocks that play a role in soil formation, factors that give character to soils, physical, chemical and biological events occurring in soil formation and soil profile and horizons, biological, physical and chemical properties of soils, soil-water-plant relations, soils' classification, soil problems and soils' management, analysis methods of basic parameters used in monitoring soil fertility and interpretation of the analysis results.
Learning Outcomes 1) Define concepts related to soil. Understands the ecosystem functions of soil and its importance as a natural resource.
2) Becomes informed about soil formation and the events that occur in the formation processes.
3) Defines the physical, chemical and biological properties of soil. It explains the relationships between features.
4) Knows the properties of soil as a natural resource and plant growing environment. Perceives soil-plant-water relationships.
5) Obtains information about the Old and New Soil Classification Systems, the differences between the classification systems, and Soils of Türkiye according to the classification systems.
6) Becomes informed about soil problems on a national and global scale. Learns soil conservation methods and soil management practices. Makes suggestions for solutions to soil problems.
7) Becomes informed about basic soil analyses. Applies soil sampling methods. Conducts soil analyses. Interprets soil analysis results.
8) Uses own knowledge in independent or joint studies. Thanks to these skills, he makes connections between onown and different field subjects. Gains the ability to carry own acquisitions to advanced education level.
