Goals The aim of this course is to understand the formation and development of the science of hadith and its methodology.
Course Content The course offers a balanced introduction to the history and methodology of hadith. Beginnings of hadith transmission, collection and classification of hadith, the development of the science of hadith and major figures and events in the history of hadith up until the 5th/11th century are discussed. Through the course, students are expected to learn the essential terminology of hadith scholarship and traditional techniques of hadith criticism. They should also be able to gain familiarity with various genres of the hadith literature and its development.
Learning Outcomes 1) Comprehends the process of formation and development of Hadith reports.
2) Comprehends the main issues of the history and methodology of hadith.
3) Explains the oral and written transmission of the hadith together with its causes and results.
