Goals To get familiarity with how hadith texts were transmitted, evaluated, interpreted, and discussed through reading a selection of texts from the second hicri century.
Course Content A selection of texts reflecting the second century jurists’ approaches to hadith and sunna in the context of their actual legal diputes are read, assessed, and discussed. Attention is especially paid to differences in their approaches and their possible reasons. Texts are selected from the writings of Abu Hanifa, al-Awza‘i, al-Layth b. Sa ‘d, Malik b. Anas, Abu Yusuf, Muhammad b. al-Hasan, and al-Shafi‘i. Discussion of primary texts are also supported by relevant readings from secondary literature.
Learning Outcomes 1) Earns familiarity with the language and style of early hadith texts.
2) Comprehends the place of hadith in early legal discussions.
3) Recognizes that there existed various different approaches towards hadith and sunna.
