Goals Explain and analyze 19th century Ottoman Political History developments and events of aforementioned period from multi-perspective approach in terms of cultural, economic, social, political, religious and intellectual perspectives based on first hand and second hand sources. Traces the continuity and shifts together with balance of power in European diplomacy in relation to Ottomans. Discuss the different historical approaches in the Ottoman History.
Course Content The Ottoman Political History mainly the 19th Century developments such as Ottoman-Russian Wars, National Uprisings of Serbians and Greeks, Reform Period of Tanzimat (1839) and Islahat (1856), The Crimean War (1853-1856), Greco-Ottoman War of 1897, Italo-Turkish War of 1911-1912 and the Balkan Wars of 1912-1913 are main subjects of the course.
Learning Outcomes 1) Identify and explain the basic terms and concepts of the Ottoman History from 1789 to 1914
2) Analyze the changes in European political, social and economic structure aforementioned period
3) Evaluate the impact Nationalist Uprisings such as Serbian and Greek and explain its causes and effects
