Goals The course Sedimentology and Principles of Stratigraphy aims to provide knowledge and skill students for comprehension of rock forming sedimentary processes, understanding occurrences of successions in sedimentary basins and interpretation of sedimentary sequences by field studies.
Course Content The course is two parts as lessons in rooms and practices and/or experiments in laboratory parallely as three and two hours in one semestre. Practices focuse on determination of sedimentary clasts and different sediments. Oral lessons start to teach philosophy of the rock formation in space and being succession in time. 2/3 of oral lessons is for classical sedimentology topics and the rest for principles of stratigraphy. The main sedimentology lectures are sedimentary cycle, sedimentary particles and their formations, transportation of sediments, gravity flows and currents, deposition and depositional environments, diagenesis, texture and sedimentary structures, facies associations and facies models, alluvial fan-stream-delta-shoreline-shelf and deep submarine fan deposits, tectonism and sedimentation, relations of facies-sequence-environments, stratigraphic boundaries and relations, stratigraphic units and their description, measured and generalized stratigraphic sections, correlations.
Learning Outcomes 1) 1. Sedimentology and the history of the stratigraphy, the structure of the earth, the importance of the stratigraphy in the sense of the earth, emphasizing the codes of professional ethics to be observed
2) 2. Describe the features and features of sedimentary rocks. Describes the processes of rock cycle, transition, migration, sedimentation and sedimentary rock by comparing them with the current processes, explores the properties of the rocks in the laboratory and teaches interpretation from the data.
3) 3. Describes the use of old environments and living creatures in the fossil recordings, interpretation of the fossils in the environment interpretation, introduces the environment model
4) 4. Identify the environment, facies, texture, and sedimentary structures and distinguish them in the laboratory. Examines the use of sedimentary structures and sediments on rocks as old environmet displays, which examines laboratory conditions
5) 5. Analyzes the relationship of tectonics-deposition-sequence. It reveals the effects of tectonics affecting the earth's crust with deposition,
6) 6. Explain facies identification methods and interpretation of defined facies
7) 7. Describe sedimentation models (alluvial fan, alluvial-fullivial, delta, beach shore, shelf, deep sea). Compares the accumulations of the current deposition environments with the samples of the elderly and reveals the sediment models according to the environments
8) 8. Describe the defined and undefined Stratigraphic Units (litho, chrono-, bio-, allo-, pedo-, sequence, magnetostr). Describe the techniques of mapping and sectioning and taking the appropriate samples from the field, explain the examinations to be done in the taken samples and apply them in the laboratory.
9) 9. Identify and interpret stratigraphic relations. Explain the sequences in which structures are overlaid and their interpretation, conformity-unconformity types and meanings
10) 10. Make stratigraphic correlations and prepare generalized stratigraphic sections. Teach and apply the customized stratigraphic section drawing.
