Goals The goal of the General Geology I course to teach students at a minimum to recognize, describe and explain the following geologic concepts; the science of geology, origin and structure of the earth, earth materials and geologic time by performing loboratory exercises.
Course Content The Science of Geology, Principles of Geology, Earth Materials, Processes That Shape the Earth Surface, Tectonic Activity of a Dynamic Planet, Geologic Time
Learning Outcomes 1) Describe science of geology and basic geological principles
2) Explain formation of universe and birth of the earth
3) Explain internal structure and layers of the earth, discuss sea-floor spreading and origin of the oceanic and continental crusts
4) Describe the theory of plate tectonics, explain plate motion and plate boundaries, evaluate on a cause and effect relation
5) Recognize the main rock-forming minerals and rock types
6) Identify igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks and describe the processes that are responsible for the occurences of rock groups
7) Identify the architecture and shape of volcanoes, explain the productions of volcanic eruptions
8) Identify and discuss the earthquakes and active faults
9) Identify and discuss crustal deformation (terms of forse, stress, deformation, strain, geologic structures) and mountain building (concept of orogeny)
10) Learn the concept of geologic time, evaluate on a cause and effect relation and prepare stratigraphic column-section
