Goals This course aims to discuss the past, present and future of play culture in the history of folklore studies with the relevant literature.
Course Content Play culture has been the subject of fundamental research in both ethnology and folklore from childhood to adulthood, in a frame that ranges from imitation (mimesis) to clearing (katharsis), from fun to racing and to dance. Starting from Johan Huizinga (1938), who opened our horizons about the concept of play in terms of the cultural meaning and function of the play, it is possible to mention an important academic accumulation on the nature, meaning, cultural and social functions of the game as a cultural phenomenon. The concept of "play", "children plays and toys", "village folk theater" and "folk dances" will be included in the primary content of this course within the scope of "play culture" which is lacking in our Folklore Program.
Learning Outcomes 1) They learn the concept of "play" and its' cultural functions.
2) They learn about "children plays and toys".
3) They learn the past, present and future of folk dances in history of folklore studies in Turkey.
