Goals This course aims to inform students about various styles of documentary, historical transformations of documentary genre and, its position within the film history. Outputs of this course is expected to serve as a basis for further theoretical and practical engagement with the documentary field.
Course Content This course offers a critical history of the documentary genre. Historical transformations and diversification of the genre will be covered through the canonical and contemporary works in the field. During the semester, to ease the engagement with the field, concepts such as reality, realism, authenticity, attestment will be discussed thoroughly.
Learning Outcomes 1) Students are informed about various styles of documentary, historical transformations of documentary genre and, its position within the film history.
2) Students are introduced with the contemporary works in the field of documentary film.
3) Students develop skill to analyse form and context in audio-visual field.
4) This course will serve as a basis for future theoretical and practical engagement with the field of documentary filmmaking.
5) Students develop an awareness of ethical responsibility in the process of engaging reality and handling social matters in documentary filmmaking.
