Goals It is aimed to reveal how mythological themes are interpreted by painters and sculptors in Western Art, the process of incorporation of mythological elements reflecting the pagan period into the monotheistic religion of Christianity, examining their representational characteristics, and revealing the importance of mythological themes in European Art History. In this course, coexistence and interaction themes such as the context of representation or the use of scenes belonging to the Christian narratives with mythological connotations will also be discussed. It will be analyzed how the mythological themes of each of the paintings or sculptures, painting styles or sculptures of the artists are reflected in style. Understanding the interpretation of mythological subjects in the medieval, renaissance and later periods is among the objectives of the course.
Course Content This course covers comparative analyzes of examples containing mythological themes in European painting and sculpture. In the context of this course, how mythological scenes are interpreted in European painting and sculpture is discussed. First of all, how the same mythological themes are painted or made by different painters and sculptors is evaluated in terms of style. Subject and stylistic diversity of thematic works are evaluated by considering historical processes and periodical styles. Especially, which mythological themes are represented in European painting and sculpture art is evaluated with with cause-effect relationships.
Learning Outcomes 1) Uses the theoretical knowledge and learns about mythology in the evaluation of European paintings.
2) Learns the effect of cultural influences on the formation of painting.
3) Have knowledge of the literature related to the field
