Goals The aim of the course is to introduce students to film theory and criticism and their relationships with both social sciences and humanities as well as art history. Students are informed about changes in film theory from early period to the present and thereby they develop reading and writing skills on film.
Course Content The course focuses on main theoretical approaches and methods which give direction to film criticism.
Learning Outcomes 1) Explain film criticism’s relation to history, culture and society.
2) Evaluates the similarities between modern art movements and cinema language.
3) Explain the link between modern forms of social power and the pleasures offered by cinema.
4) Understands the possibilities and limitations of realism and formalism in cinema.
5) Discusses the two founding elements of cinema the formal and ideological uses of gaze and sound.
6) Interprets the link between representations in cinema and imaginations of society.
7) Evaluates the film theory chronologically.
