PhD Program on the Sea and Maritime Law (English)
Goals
One of the priorities of the “Turkish National Maritime Research Strategy (TUDAS) Document,” approved by the Council of Ministers, is the improving and strengthening of strengthening of research and education capacity in the field of the sea and maritime law. Following the recommendation of the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs to achieve such purpose, is thought that, with the phD program to be established in Ankara University, program will train experts at a level that will give guidance to Turkish foreign policy and these people will actively participate on behalf of Turkey at international meetings. Maritime disputes which Turkey has an active role are adressed at scientific meetings held with the participation of international experts. The defense of foreign policy in accordance with Turkish maritime policies at these meetings also necessitates technical knowledge in both the sea and maritime law and policies. Therefore, experts who will be trained through the phD program that will be carried out by Program, will contribute to the development of Turkish seas policy and therefore Turkish foreign policies.
Summary of Program Outcomes
Within the scope of the program, students will be able to understand and have theoretical and practical knowledge on the basic principles of international law of the sea, the flagging of ships and ship registers, the legal regime of the straits used for international navigation, the Turkish Straits, port state control, global challenges to maritime security, maritime accidents, liability and compensation issues due to marine pollution in the light of international conventions, limitation of liability under the 1976 LLMC Convention, enforcement of maritime claims under international conventions and Turkish law, charter contracts, basic principles of the law of carriage, protection and indemnity insurance for maritime law, ship mortgage and basic principles of mortgage, sea carrier's liability for the loss and damage to as well as delay in delivery of the goods, bills of lading and other marine documents.
