Goals This course aims at developing the students abilities to read, comprehend, interpret and express their opinions both orally and in written works; to minimize their difficulties in reading and comprehending the texts; and to teach the basic elements and concepts of literature.
Course Content This course is an introduction to literature through short stories. In a series of lectures we will discuss specific terms and elements relating to the study of fiction in the light of various short stories in English. We will analyse the elements of fiction (i.e. plot, structure, characterisation, point of view, setting, theme, symbolism, tone and style), examine how these elements work together, and most importantly practise the art of close reading on a range of texts.
Learning Outcomes 1) Explains the basic terms and concepts of prose and short story.
2) Provides skills to read, comprehend and analyse prose works and short stories.
3) Explains the historical, political, cultural, sociological and economic events related to the studied texts.
4) Contributes to the acquisiton of English reading, writing and speaking skills.
