Goals By the end of the course students will have acquired an understanding of the structural elements of major poetic forms and styles. They will also be able to pursue independent analyses of poems they will come across.
Course Content This course is for sophomores. It is devoted to provide the students with a deeper understanding of fundamental items, types, and characteristics of the art of poetry.
Learning Outcomes 1) Students examine the selected poems within the context of their form, style, content and meaning.
2) Students learn to differentiate between different poetic forms and examine their general characteristics.
3) Students learn to identify specific figures of speech and interpret their implications.
4) Students gain insight into the historical, social, political and economic aspects of the period in which the selected poets lived.
5) Students learn to use the general terms and concepts related to the art of poetry appropriately.
6) Students gain the ability to read, understand, and interpret poetry.
7) Students practise the art of close reading of a poem.
8) Students learn to read poems aloud, paying attention to stress, pause and metre.
